Understanding the media sector

They are many sectors which Encompass media, These sectors are the following
  • Publishing
  • Games
  • Film
  • Radio
  • TV
  • Photo Imaging
  • Interactive Media
  • Animation
  • Advertsting
we will be looking in depth at each sector picking apart each sector to see what makes it tick and the history behind each sector to give you the readers information



Publishing
Publishing is the process of production and dissemination of literature, music, or information


In the UK publishing industry, they are a wide variety of jobs these include


  • administration - customer services, IT support, financial, personnel and accountancy roles;
  • contracts and rights (legal) - negotiating and drawing up contracts; selling rights to publications to film or TV companies, merchandising companies, or other publishers; and legal work including advising on intellectual property rights and dealing with disputes;
  • production and design - designers are responsible for planning the overall look and feel of a publication; production involves management of the practical aspects of typesetting, printing and binding;
  • distribution and sales - warehousing, logistics, sales and account management;
  • editorial - commissioning work or buying manuscripts and then liaising with authors, design and production to see the work through to publication;
  • marketing and publicity - planning advertising campaigns and events, and developing advertising and marketing material.

There are approximately 194,650 people working in the UK publishing industry, It is estimated that there are over 11,000 publishing businesses in the UK. The industry generates over £10billion,Most publishing companies are small and have fewer than ten employees. However, there are a low number of very large companies who employ a high proportion of the publishing workforce.




Video Games
the video game industry is one the largest growing media sectors


The UK has around 10,000 people working in games development which is not a large amount at all. However, Most of the major gaming companies split there workforce into subsidiaries for example Rockstar have 10 subsidiaries thought the world. UK video game software, hardware and accessory sales totalled £2.52 billion in 2011



Film

The UK film industry has a long and proud heritage which now has a total workforce of around 27,800 people


The film industry divides itself into five sectors:
  • Development - the writing, packaging and financing of film ideas and scripts.
  • Production - the process of setting up and shooting every scene in a film.
  • Post Production - where all these shots are assembled, treated and mixed into a finished product.
  • Distribution - the process of selling this product to audiences, via the cinemas, retailers and rental firms.
  • Exhibition - the cinemas which screen the film for the general public.

The UK film industry contributed more than £4.6bn towards the UK GDP in 2011
Radio

The radio Industry, The industry has been growing steadily in recent years and now employs over 22,000 people, in 2011 the Total Industry Revenue gained £1,162m, £456m came from advertisement Revenue. They are a wide variety of jobs including

  • Broadcasting Assistant
  • Radio Presenter
  • Reporter
  • Radio Producer
  • Radio Traffic Manager
  • Station Manager
  • Sales executive
And so on and so on
TV

The UK television industry generated £11.7bn, Much of this came via subscription revenue. There is a wide variety of jobs in the television industry such as

  • Art and design
  • Camera
  • Hair and makeup
  • Journalism and sport
  • Lighting
  • Performers
  • Production
  • Sound

Photo Imaging



The UK photo imaging industry consists of over 43,100 ponies with over 8,100 companies in these companies the job list are as the following


  • Image producers (including laboratories and minilabs)
  • Photo retail
  • Picture libraries and agencies
  • Manufacturers
  • Support services (e.g. equipment hire and repair)


Interactive Media 



the UK interactive media industry consists of around 34,300 and is worth around several billion pounds, In the interactive media sector there is jobs ranging from Designer and programmer and everything inbetween
